Notes

General Note
Reprint of the 1899 ed., published under title: The history of Wyoming from the earliest known discoveries.
Summary
The American West is identified with adventure, daring, courage and reward. The glamour of its mountainsand deserts and the fortitude of the men who faced its rawness are a part of our heritage. The West has given rise to a large body of literature, from the reports of the first explorers to the reevaluations of the present historians. Outstanding in this literature is the history of Wyoming written by Charles G. Coutant. Wyoming is the crossroads of the West and, in itself, representative of the whole. Mr. Coutant lived and wrote while Wyoming history was still being made, while the explorers of the West were alive to relate to him, directly, their story of conquest.
